UPDATE Book Giveaway Acanthus Carving and Design by Bob Yorburg Hans Sandom Illustrator

Acanthus Carving and Design is a book full of color step-by-step photos as well as helpful line drawings. The book provides information on preparation and design, in addition to detailed steps to draw and carve acanthus scrolls and leaves. Two projects - a bread board and a pierced panel - are included, along with a photo gallery to provide more inspiration. There is also a section on sharpening your tools and finishing your carvings. The subheading for the chapter titled Getting Started is “It Is Easier Than You Think”. Those are some encouraging words.

RICH ESPRESSO FINISH black and white paris dresser

Richer than black, warmer than ebony, its ESPRESSO!

and Im not talking about coffee ladies.

I painted the top of this Paris rue dresser with one coat of ASCP Graphite over a medium colored

wood finish. Graphite is a dark charcoal color but is too flat on its own.

Once the paint dried I applied a liberal layer or 2 of ASCP dark wax.

Above you can see the upper edge has dark wax on it and the lower edges is just raw graphite paint.

I took a dozen photos to show you this and its still iffy whether you can see the difference perfectly.

The dark wax takes a long time to dry if you want it to be rich and heavy. I let it dry for several days,

buffing occasionally then adding a coat of clear wax to give it a nice shine.

These handles are done the same way as the Etsy hardware.

I added some well placed graphics to the drawers.

*Well placed* is an interesting term considering I tried several different ideas,

in several different locations, sanding away the mistakes in between attempts.

These graphics were drawn and filled in with black paint pens.

HOW THE MAGIC HAPPENS blue black and white dresser

SO when the rain comes before expected sometimes my furniture doesnt get

photographed the way I would like.

Case in point this blue dresser.

On a lovely warm sunny day Ill pull something out of storage and start working in the yard.

Ill fix all the broken bits including drawer glides, and replace missing drawer guides.

Nailing a backer on, and glue a chipped drawer corner back in place.

At some point I decide what color Im going to start with,

this day it was blue for a piece Shelly had done over at A LITTLE BIT OF SHIZZLE

I wasnt trying to reproduce her work of art,

its just the piece that inspired the color choice of the day.

Masking, spraying, distressing, and waxing all happens before installing new hardware.

A finish for the top gets underway.

Once finished but before I can move things around to style for photos,

the rain comes or even simple life happens.

So this is what happens .....

It doesnt happen too often because I work hard at getting good photos,

but it is a necessary evil when you have bad lighting, bad weather, or limited time.

HOMESENSE HOW I ADORE THEE my new birdcage and painted mirror

Last visit to Homesense happened to be a quick

stop while we were on a peaceful drive to get away

from the hustle and bustle of life and work. As both

George and I work at home a great deal in the

evenings sometimes we just take off for a quiet

drive and enjoy an ice cappuchino from Tim Hortons.

Recently I had mentioned out loud wanting a bird

cage. I had really wanted one for a long time but

never mentioned it. With my retail job Ive been all

over the Fraser Valley as well as different locations

through out the country and really just never see them.

Well during this last stop at Homesense we meandered around

the store together close to closing time, George would pop

in and out of the isles showing me things he saw.

Then just as we rounding the final lap to the finish

line he popped into the isle again this time with a

beautiful white birdcage in hand.

I gasped and immediately said

"I WANT IT!"

Then common sense took over and I asked

"HOW MUCH?"

Turned out to be $40, come on!

Well I still wanted it.

While this whole thought process was going on

George popped in with another bird house of a

different color and style. Now I was even more

excited at options. Be careful what you wish for.

Before the whole thing was done we musta found

close to a dozen different styles, sizes and colors.

And different prices.

Including this pretty pretty turquoise one and it was only $15
*** SOLD ***

Another find that evening was this great

mini suitcase.

We also got our large oval clock that youve seen in the past

and a few book boxes at Homesense.

Before I go I want to share with you some encouragement I received from

AMY from MAISON DECOR

She painted her beautiful mirror frame pink and

encouraged me when I told her I didnt quite have

the nerve to do mine.

Well I was finally able to find a bit of time Mothers

day morning and went for it. Happy Mothers day to me.

Mines blue, its bold, its finished, and its brilliant.

Did you notice it also matches the bird cage?

Pretty tools and boxes

I have two long time female friends that I makes gifts for on Christmas and their birthdays. In the past they have gotten picture frames, a puzzle box, a sliding DVD holder, a set of chess pieces, and a coffee barrel. This year I have gone simple for Christmas and they will receive lathe turned pens.

But Im planning for their birthdays...one in February and the other in March. While in a hardware store I came across some tools that were not only functional, but made pretty for girls. I bought two different patterns of 4 tools each. But that isnt MAKING anything. So I need to customize. I intend to make two rectangular boxes to hold the tools and I want to form fit the interior of the cases with appropriately colored felt. Then, I will have 2 little brass plates mades to identify their ownership.

Since they are both getting the same thing I thought it may be good to delay the gifts until the second birthday in March. We can all get together for dinner and I can give the boxes at the same time. Then they can decide which they like best and trade. Finally I can attach the name plates when they decide which is theirs.

Here is a picture of the tools. The boxes will be made of sycamore with cherry splines and the interiors will be blue for one set and purple for the other.

Cedric the Cat and his new bowl

Hi Everyone,

Well, heres something I dont do everyday--make a bowl for a cat! Heres the story of Cedric the Cat:

I have a lovely neighbor who has purchased quite a large number of my bowls (in fact she owns or will own more of my work than anyone else) and she is the owner of a very special cat named Cedric. Apparently he was living inside of a local Target store and was discovered one day when he was found by store employees tearing into a bag of dog food. He was taken home by one of the employees, who after a time found that they couldnt keep the cat and so the cat was given to one of the daughters of my neighbor, who in turn gave her the cat.

As a way of saying thank you to my neighbor for all the bowls shes purchased, and because I suspect the cat takes as much care of her as she takes care of him, I decided to make Cedric a bowl. Here we go:

I laminated a small block of wood out of some scrap hickory and black walnut and cut it into a circle:

I then put it on the lathe and gave it a very fancy shape. I think Cedric will like this:

I gave it a good sanding and flipped it over and hollowed it out:

These next two photos show Cedrics bowl from the top and the side:

And here it is with a preliminary coat of salad bowl varnish:

This will need to have several more coats of varnish so it will be easy to keep clean. Ill post finish photos in a couple of days.

As were do to get snow tonight and early tomorrow along with rain and wind, Im going to close down for now and come back tomorrow and well work on the tea box some more.

Rosewood Bowl discussion and plans and a good reason why I dont make square stuff

Hi Everyone,

Well, I went down to the wood shop today to start the rosewood bowl and to make a book stand for myself and my family. The bowl came out ok and the book stand is a mess and Ive dropped a clamp on my foot.

...sigh, here we go...

Indian rosewood is a hardwood that grows in tropical climates and it also grows in the US in Florida. The turning blank for this bowl came from Florida and is a really rich shade of reddish brown.

I started turning the outside of the bowl and this part of the turning went well:

I wanted to make this particular bowl with more of a fan-shaped profile and Im quite there yet so Im going to leave the faceplate on and turn it more tomorrow.

The past several days Ive had the bright idea to make a book stand to hold books, e-readers at an angle so I wouldnt have to hold them with my hands, as they usually hurt quite a bit after a long day in the shop. And I made a complete mess of the whole thing:

And then to top the whole thing off, just as I was about to walk out of the shop, one of my pipe clamps fell right on the middle of my right foot. It dropped out of its rack and does that ever hurt!

Im hot, tired, and limping all over the place.

Oh well, Ill try it again tomorrow.
