living wood joinery

one of the extracurricular activities that took up a great deal of my time this semester was grafting, which is an AWESOME phenomena of the plant world that rewards the skilled practitioner with a wider variety of fruit crops or ornamentals than would otherwise be possible.

at its essense, grafting is just the whittling of wood joints (done with live wood of matched size and at a specific time of year). The layer of tissue just below the epidermis (the cambium) is really the only important part of the equation, for this is where moisture, minerals, and sugars are transported within the plant body. If even a small section of cambium is in contact, the plant will be able to repair the damaged tissue along the border and heal the two pieces as one. The moves must be practiced and the tools laid out within reach, for the whole operation must be completed as quickly as possible, preferably in under a minute (contact with the air will dry out the cambium of both rootstock and scion = death).

that said, its a relatively straightforward process that still doesnt seem like it should be possible. Ive got a few years practice, so i went big this year and i completed over 115 grafts of some 40 species. It was a monumental undertaking, and ive been thrilled to watch the dormant buds open up and absolutely gush with leaves, flowers, and woody stems.

ill have to tend the joints for the next few months to ensure the sealant doesnt open up and dry out the union, but soon enough my yard (and my face) will be covered with apricots, nectarines, plums, peaches, apples, pears, and cherries... yea!

heres a couple links to showcase several types of grafted joinery:

Happy New Year!

47 degrees and cold and rainy. Its really nasty. And rainy.
And cold. Did I mention that this sucks?
I cant help but thinking nostalgically about the
county fair back in July. Oh GOD I want heat!
I promise to never complain about it again!
Did I mention its cold here?
Wow. Its 2011. When I was a kid I thought we would all be driving around in hovercrafts and wearing matching jumpsuits by now. 2011 doesnt seem that much different than 1976 when I was 10. Except for the internet. Well, that and disco died.

I kicked off the new year by doing absolutely nothing in the shop. I wanted to, but it is just too damn cold. I go outside, freeze for a few minutes and come back into my nice warm house.

Right now it is rainy and 47 degrees. Yep. It sucks. Granted, I grew up in Colorado, and fully understand what cold really is, but in California, 47  feels like 17 in the Midwest. Im serious. We need some sort of new index. You know, like the "heat index" or the "wind chill factor". Id like to call it the "California Reality Atmospheric Precision" indicator. I leave it to you to deduce your own acronym.

I spent a lot of time trying to get "inspired" by going through my old issues of woodworking magazines:

On the plus side, my ancient fridge that was struggling so much in July has no trouble keeping my beer cold. Its a strange time of year. I just plucked my final tomato last week which is noteworthy because they are usually history by Thanksgiving:

Id like to make that Fibonacci Gauge, but Im not sure how to stretch an entire video out of it. At least one that hasnt already been done. So I had the notion to make a new paper towel holder. At least one thats a little different than all the others. I sketched a crude design:

Now were getting somewhere! Heres my idea. I discovered that rolls of foil, waxed paper, plastic wrap, etc. are all the same size, and the same length as a roll of paper towels. Why not a paper towel holder that has a box on top to hold all those other rolls?  Yeah man, if it is halfway warm tomorrow, Im making this sucker!

Are you guys doing anything in the shop this weekend? Lets hear some good cold weather ideas! Want to post your project here? Send it to me at zrammedia (at) gmail (dot) com. (In case you are wondering, I am trying to cut down on the spambots by spelling it all out.) Or better yet, log onto the Mere Mortals Facebook page and upload pictures of your project!

Staring at wood

I seem to spend an inordinate amount of time thinking and planning projects. I get an idea in my head and end up staring at boards of various sizes, but I’ll spend the entire weekend not cutting a single board.

I always maintain that the number one consumer of time in the woodshop is sanding, but planning must come in a close second. My son is involved in all stuff Shakespeare, which inspired me for my current project, even if you can’t really get the connection from, once again, my lame-o sketches.

Again, I MUST spend some time learning Google SketchUp. Yeah I gotta fit it into my schedule somewhere. The problem is my short attention sp…

I have at least confirmed that I will be using rare earth magnets in this project. If you’ve never used rare earth magnets, go to your local craft store and pick some up. They are amazingly strong and can be used for lots of things. Plus, they are just fun to play with.

Make an end grain cutting board

One of the most popular woodworking projects

It seems that at one time or another, all woodworkers try their hands at making an end-grain cutting board. Its easy to understand why: cutting boards are useful, durable, allow you to really get creative on the design, and are simple to build.

Built by Mike D. (RetiredCoastie)
 on LumberJocks.com
And I have never made one. Its one of those projects thats been on my to-do list for a long time. As you may know, I love to cook and have been getting by for years with one of those thick plastic ones. Its built into my counter and slides out for use. The problem is that it gets mangled pretty quickly and doesnt clean well. After a while is begins to take on a permanent onion odor. Yuck. So I have to replace it every year.
Built by Jeff (jonasramus)
on LumberJocks.com

Wood cutting boards, on the other hand, will last nearly forever. The end grain of wood is very forgiving on knives and is actually more sanitary to use. The wood tends to heal itself. And if, after a lot of use, it starts to look really ragged and scratched, you can renew it just by resanding the surface.

I wasnt sure what more I had to offer in the way of a video, though. There are lots of cutting board videos. If you decide to make one, you definitely want to check out The Wood Whisperers video. He really takes you through every last detail and consideration.

Cutting Board Designer

Last month, Jeremy Greiner sent me a copy of a program he developed called Cutting Board Designer. After playing around with it for a while, I discovered how handy it is. It lets you lay out some complex patterns and get a good indication what your board will look like before you cut any wood. Check it out!

Rainstick

Ive been toying with the idea of making a rainstick for a while. Traditionally, these are made with bamboo shoots or cacti and have nails driven through their walls. Or I guess even more traditionally, thorns. They can be filled with beans, pebbles, lentils, rice, etc. The configuration of the baffles and the object sizes determine the unique sound of each rainstick.

I didnt want to drive a bunch of nails into mine, so I simply cut out a bunch of chicken wire hexagons and slid them onto a half inch dowel. The body is quarter inch oak plywood and each strip is beveled at 30 degree angles.

I puzzled over how to glue six long strips together, until I came up with the idea of laying them out with masking tape. It worked great.

I used rice as a filler. The sound is really nice and can be controlled by the angle at which the rainstick is tipped. Enjoy the project.

These kids today

Kids of every generation get a bad rap. When I was a kid, Judas Priest and Iron Maiden were certain to corrupt every kid that listened to their music. I dated a girl who dyed her hair blue. Horrors. Things havent really changed that much: we latch on to a few examples of "kids gone bad", ignoring the fact that most kids are like we were and do some really cool stuff.

My son Wyatt is rehearsing for a musical. He goes to school at 7:30 in the morning and gets out at 6:00 in the evening when rehearsal ends. He rehearses every Saturday from 9:00 to 3:00. Starting next week he has two weeks of rehearsing until 10:00 at night. And Sundays are thrown in too. He does that, squeezes in homework, and even managed to go to the Homecoming dance last week. My schedule was never any where near that daunting.

Austin

Over on my Facebook page, Austin Hall posted his first woodworking project. He is 12 and has a very limited set of tools: a handsaw, a drill bit, a sander, a protractor, a ruler, and glue, yet managed to design and build a birdhouse. (Im pretty sure my first project was a birdhouse, too.)  To make the hole, he drilled a series of holes around a circle and popped it out. Having a desire to achieve something is the first step in any process.

Luca

Luca Browski is a friend of my sons. Shes 14 and filled with talent. Check out her singing in this video. And she plays the ukulele, which is just so cool. Drop by her YouTube channel, especially her recent live performance up in Napa and leave her some comments!

Make a wood clock

A video from the Non-Yankee Workshop.

Let me give you some back story on this project.

Last weekend, I started tossing around ideas for a BBQ caddy and planned on building it for this weeks show. You may be wondering why I would build a barbecue project in January. Well it is Summer in Australia and I have been working with Warren Downes to develop something for Australia Day coming up at the end of the month.

As we started hashing out ideas, I began to realize that this could make for a really fun video...especially since he offered to shoot some stuff Down Under. So I have tabled that project until I can come up with something good. That video and project will be on the 27th, just in time for the holiday.

New project

So I needed a project for this week. As I mentioned in my last post, Ive been saving the clock for this project for a long time. I started playing around with various pieces of scrap wood and sketching out a bunch of different designs. Eventually, the concept of a "floating" clock struck me. From there, it was actually pretty simple to execute. My main concern was how to make the holes in the circle perfectly straight and perpendicular. Boring them before cutting the circle is the solution.

I shot the video without any sound so I could add a soundtrack of some sort. It seemed simple enough that it didnt require me babbling on. After I edited it together I wanted to tack on an introduction and thought it would be funny to do it as a real woodworking show, complete with safety warnings and overly long instruction. I put on my Roy Underhill mustache and a ridiculously bad Southern accent. Then it hit me to include an incredibly verbose soundtrack on a video that needed none!

Copycat

Now the strange part. After I posted the finished photo here and on Facebook a few days ago, a couple of people mentioned that it looked like one that Marc Spagnuolo made. My first thought was one of amusement: I couldnt imagine Marc making something so simple!

Well, more people mentioned the same thing, then a viewer sent me a link to The Wood Whisperers video. Yup. Sure enough, back in 2008, Marc made a clock that looks very similar to the one I just made. It is eerie: he used a dark wood for the frame and light wood for the floating center. Mine even has double splines on the corners, just like Marcs.

So wow. I guess I should familiarize myself with more of Marcs projects. Perhaps this is a design Ive seen somewhere before and was in my unconscious mind, just waiting to come out? Well Marc, sorry about the similarity. If I had seen your clock I certainly would have come up with a different project. But as it is, enjoy my take on the "floating clock".

How To Prepare For A New Finish

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Kenneth_J_Ellis]Kenneth J Ellis
Before starting the work, make a thorough inspection of the piece after you have removed the old finish. You may find holes, dents, cracks and other damage that were not previously visible in the surface that will require repairs before preparing for the new finish.
Some of the procedures for preparing the surface are seldom used, but are included to give you full knowledge of them. They are bleaching, scraping, sanding, staining, and filling. The choice of those to be used for a single job are determined by the type and condition of the wood, after the old finish has been removed. Some are necessary according to conditions and some are a matter of choice.
BLEACHING
Bleaching is used today mostly to remove undesirable stains. After the old finish has been removed, any darkened or discolored spots that remain can be lightened or entirely removed by the proper use of bleach. When working with pine or maple, it is best to remove discoloration and freshen up the surface.
Types of Bleaches
There are four common bleaches used by home handymen to lighten wood or remove undesirable stains. They are: PREPARED BLEACH, The simplest method of getting a good bleach is to buy a prepared bleach, which usually comes in the form of two solutions that may be applied successively or mixed together, according to directions on the label. These bleaches are sold in some paint stores or through mail order outlets. HOUSEHOLD PRODUCTS, Sometimes a laundry bleach in which sodium hypo-chlorite is the bleaching agent is effective for such woods as walnut, maple, and gum. Household ammonia is a good bleaching for all but dark woods, however,it is best for spot work only. OXALIC ACID, This bleach works only when a mild bleach is needed. It can be used successfully for such open-grained woods as oak, chestnut, and ash. Some professional strippers use it routinely to remove slight discolorations during the stripping process. HYDROGEN PEROXIDE, Probably the most satisfactory but most expensive bleaches are these based on a strong solution of hydrogen peroxide 30 or 35 percent. This commercial-grade bleach should not be confused with the 3 percent solution used as an antiseptic.
Using Prepared Beach
This two-solution bleach must be intermixed or applied in successive steps. All contain strong chemicals so its important that you wear rubber gloves to protect your hands. An apron or old clothing should also be worn since these bleaches will attack most fabrics and follow the label directions carefully. These are best for overall work. They are difficult to control when spot bleaching. The bleach can be applied with a brush or sponge and should be allowed to dry on the surface until the desired effect is reached. The instructions will tell you whether neutralization or rinsing is required. After bleaching and rinsing is completed, the piece should be allowed to stand until completely dry. Then sand lightly with a very fine sandpaper to remove raised grain. Be careful not to sand more deeply than the bleach has penetrated.
Using Household Products
Most household products are better for spot work. This is how to use laundry bleach and ammonia as bleaching agents. First, apply the product full strength over the spot or surface of the wood. Next, wash the product off with clear water after it has been on the surface about 15 minutes. Check to see if the desired color has been attained. If not, repeat the treatment. When the right color has been achieved, rinse the entire surface with water. Let the furniture stand to dry for at least 48 hours.
Using Oxalic Acid
Oxalic acid can be purchased at a drugstore or in some paint stores. It comes in powder or crystal form. Start by dissolving 1 ounce of powder or 2 ounces of crystals in a pint of very hot water. Using a large brush, apply the solution hot to the entire surface from which the finish has been removed. Let the solution remain for 10 to 20 minutes and then wipe it off with a damp cloth. Repeat if necessary to reach the color you are after. When the proper result is reached, wash off with 1 part ammonia in 10 parts of water. This will neutralize the bleach and stop its further action. Then wash with clear water and let it dry for at least 24 hours.
SANDING AND SMOOTHING
The smoothing of a wood surface is done with sandpaper by first working with relatively coarse papers, followed by those of finer grit. Steel wool is often used for final smoothing.
Rules For Sanding
The sanding of a wood surface is the least difficult of all the procedures, yet it is one of the most important parts of refinishing and must always be done thoroughly and with great care. When sanding, remember these three rules. First always sand with the grain of the wood--never across the grain.Second, use straight strokes with an even pressure, avoiding a twisting or circular motion, and last, use a paper of as coarse a grit as the wood will stand without scratching, then finer ones until the surface is as smooth as the wood will become. After sanding with the finest grit paper, use a steel wool pad for the final smoothing. After using the steel wool, all dust must be removed by wiping with a tack rag. This is a cloth that is treated to attract and hold dust. It is usually available at pant dealers that handle wood finishes.
Many sources an be found at the public library for furniture refinishing.

Alaxander Pelikan

I found this collection by Dutch designer Alexander Pelikan on NOTCOT.org. The table and chairs are made by combining wood and plastic. The joints are plastic and have a really organic form which juxtaposes the straightness of the wooden sections. Unfortunatly, the website doesnt say how the designer actually connected the wood with the plastic so its a bit of a mystery. I assume that he drilled or cut the pattern into the wooden parts first, then set them into a mold and poured the resin in and then cleaned it all up. The pattern is meant to look organic and kinda looks like a spotted cow to me (in a good way).

Make a wooden wall hanging showing off where you live

Been wondering what to do with all those tiny scraps of wood youve been saving? Heres a project you can make in no time flat. Gather up a mixed bag of cut-offs or pallet wood, glue them to a board and cut out the shape of your home state, province or country.

Make your own and post a video!
Shoot a short video of what you made and post it as a video response to my video on YouTube*. I think it will be fun to see all the places people are woodworking.

Find a map that you want by doing a quick Google Images search, print it out, paste it on your boards and cut it out with a jig saw, scroll saw, or band saw.

I made my home state out of various scraps of pallet wood. The interesting thing about pallets is that the wood all ages differently, giving you different hues and colors.

For my second cut-out, I used a map of Brazil. I wanted to give a shout-out to my Portuguese-speaking friends in South America. Over the years of doing Woodworking for Mere Mortals, I have made friends with quite a few Brazilian woodworkers who I have found to be among the most creative people I know. Olá amigos! Obrigado pelo vosso apoio. (I hope Google Translate didnt just mangle that!)

More router table ideas

Benjamen Johnson

If you want to learn how to make a serious router table, check out Bens Workshop. On his site, he has a great tutorial on how he made this.

Jason Othoudt

Heres another simple router table, yet Jason incorporated dust collection and various sized plates for the bit opening. I like the cost: $25.

I build it for about $25 out of CDX plywood and laminating 2 sheets of 1/4 ply (dont remember the type) over the CDX base for the top. I made other plates for smaller bits and the fence allows for attachment to my shop vac and has hardboard cover to close off the opening. I build it because I didnt like the height of commercial tables and I surly hated the price.

Ray Arnold

Rays router table is a hybrid: mostly home made, but with a purchased fence and top. I love all the storage space.

This is a router table I made a few years ago, the top and the fence are from Woodpeckers, the rest I made, however I made a new face for the fence with a slot rail to mount feather boards an such, is from Woodpeckers, the rest I made. It is made of MDF and red oak and pine  It’s held up well.

Live edge Walnut tables

This was a particularly interesting job. The owners of a beautiful timber frame home wanted tables built as featured elements in a small living room. After searching for the right piece of wood they found an amazing slab of walnut from a lumber dealer in Margaree. At its widest, this piece was just over 40 inches and over 8 feet in length. Through careful collaboration with the home owners I laid out the rough shape of each table on the wood. Next came the scary part; cutting that magnificent slab in half with the circular saw. These pieces had to fit very precisely around the 8x8 posts of this home. The tables sit atop simple brackets and are finished with oil and wax. Although these pieces will never be reproduced I love working with live-edge wood and try to keep a supply on hand.

My New Old Tools

Recently my girlfriends mum invited me to look through her shed for any tools that might be of use in my new woodworking hobby. A lot of the tools I found were suffering from rust and have not been used (or even touched) for around 18 years.

Here are a few of the tools I am either in the process of cleaning up or have cleaned up and pressed back into service once again.
  • Roll of 12 Auger bits
  • Ridgway Large Expanding Bit Set 3/8" - 3"
  • Large Yankee Push Screwdriver
  • Small Ratchet Screwdriver
  • Marking Gauge
  • Small Hammer
  • Stanley 102 Block Plane
  • Rapier Spokeshave
  • 2 x Egg Beater Drills (One Stanley the other a Millers Falls?)
  • Spinney Bailey No#4 Bench Plane - I may set this up as a Scrub Plane
  • 2 x Sureform (Straight & Curved) Planes
  • Wooden (Shoulder?) Plane.
There were also three Warranted Superior Panel saws which I counted as: 5tpi, 8tpi & 10tpi all filed rip. I de-rusted the blades, sanded and oiled the wooden handles and have sent them off along with my own 10tpi panel saw for re-sharpening and should get them back next week.

I have requested the 5tpi to be filed rip, the 8tpi to be filed crosscut and the other two 10tpi saws rip and crosscut. At some point in the near future, I would like get the required saw files and tools and be responsible for sharpening my own saws.

Cleaning, de-rusting, oiling, servicing and sharpening all these tools is helping me better understand how they work and whats required to keep them functioning properly - all the more important in the hand tool world.

Its certainly a steep learning curve!
