RICH ESPRESSO FINISH black and white paris dresser

Richer than black, warmer than ebony, its ESPRESSO!
and Im not talking about coffee ladies.

I painted the top of this Paris rue dresser with one coat of ASCP Graphite over a medium colored
wood finish. Graphite is a dark charcoal color but is too flat on its own.

Once the paint dried I applied a liberal layer or 2 of ASCP dark wax.

Above you can see the upper edge has dark wax on it and the lower edges is just raw graphite paint.
I took a dozen photos to show you this and its still iffy whether you can see the difference perfectly.

The dark wax takes a long time to dry if you want it to be rich and heavy. I let it dry for several days,
buffing occasionally then adding a coat of clear wax to give it a nice shine.

These handles are done the same way as the Etsy hardware.

I added some well placed graphics to the drawers.
*Well placed* is an interesting term considering I tried several different ideas,
in several different locations, sanding away the mistakes in between attempts.

These graphics were drawn and filled in with black paint pens.

HOW THE MAGIC HAPPENS blue black and white dresser

SO when the rain comes before expected sometimes my furniture doesnt get
photographed the way I would like.

Case in point this blue dresser.

On a lovely warm sunny day Ill pull something out of storage and start working in the yard.

Ill fix all the broken bits including drawer glides, and replace missing drawer guides.
Nailing a backer on, and glue a chipped drawer corner back in place.

At some point I decide what color Im going to start with,
this day it was blue for a piece Shelly had done over at A LITTLE BIT OF SHIZZLE

I wasnt trying to reproduce her work of art,
its just the piece that inspired the color choice of the day.
Ive added a link to see more of Shellys work at the bottom of this post.

Masking, spraying, distressing, and waxing all happens before installing new hardware.

A finish for the top gets underway.

Once finished but before I can move things around to style for photos,
the rain comes or even simple life happens.

So this is what happens .....

Photo editing!

It doesnt happen too often because I work hard at getting good photos,
but it is a necessary evil when you have bad lighting, bad weather, or limited time.

VILAS DINING TABLE

It may not have pretty curves or fancy carvings but it has beautiful functionality and solid
construction with great history.

I found a Vilas table put out on the road side for the garbage men to take away.
It had silver spray paint on it like it had been used as a shop table and most of the original
finish was damaged or flaking.

But it was a fabulous solid rock maple small space dining table with 2 extending leaves.
You just dont find these every day.

It was easy to sand where the finish was flaking off,
and not so easy where the silver metallic paint was.

The leaves pull out so smoothly.

After cleaning it up and sanding to bare wood it got sprayed with chalk paint.

A gentle sanding started to create a nice white wash look.

This is really a great table, I wish I had space to keep it.

Poly and wax created the softest smoothest surface.

BOUDOIR CORSET DRESSER

I started applying a graphic to an antique tall boy dresser last week.
After many hours of the smell of sharpie markers I have finished.
NOTE:
this project is for an advance DIYer

The graphic was found at the OLD DESIGN SHOP:
http://olddesignshop.com/2012/07/free-digital-image-flexibone-moulded-victorian-corset-ad/
and I used a box of a dozen sharpie markers to fill in the image.

Graphic transfer methods can be found here
Read through the list of 12 options to find the method that will work best for you and your project.

Here is a peak at what the dresser looked like before I painted it white.

I ended up printing this image on 8 sheets of landscape paper, 2 across and 4 down.
Try using http://www.blockposters.com/ to cut your image up, I definitely recommend it.

Here is a close up showing what it looks like after waxing and sanding the image.
** WAX BEFORE SANDING **

This Boudoir dresser is listed on the SHOWROOM page with price and dimensions.
